Hosting a Rooftop Node

This is a draft guide for future rooftop node hosts. Details will be added as the pilot network gets started and we begin field testing.

Overview

Hosting a rooftop node helps expand the VONet network. These nodes are small antennas or routers placed on a rooftop or other high spot. They connect to nearby nodes and help bring internet access to more people in your neighborhood.

You don’t need to be technical to host. Volunteers will help with setup, and all equipment is provided through donations or community support when available.

What Hosting Means

A rooftop node connects to other VONet devices nearby It usually requires a small antenna and a clear line of sight It connects to power and runs a cable inside your building It helps your neighbors get online while improving your own connection

What You’ll Need

Safe access to your roof or high point A place to mount a small antenna or bracket Permission from the property owner if you rent or manage a building A willingness to host long-term and keep the equipment powered

What Setup Looks Like

A basic mount or pole for the antenna Weatherproof cables running inside to a power source Possibly a PoE (power over Ethernet) injector We will help with installation guides, hardware options, and safety tips once the pilot launches

Safety and Access

We’ll never ask you to install anything unsafe If you're not comfortable climbing or mounting gear, a volunteer can help You can end hosting anytime and keep any equipment you provided
