Node Setup (DIY)
This is a draft guide meant to show what a future DIY setup page might look like. Final steps and equipment will be added once the pilot is up and running.
Overview
This page will walk you through how to set up a VONet node on your own. A “node” is a small piece of equipment (like a rooftop antenna or router) that connects to other nodes and helps extend the community network.
When this guide is complete, it’ll include real examples, equipment options, and troubleshooting tips based on the first pilot installs.
What You'll Need (Example Only)
- A rooftop or window with clear line of sight to another VONet node
- Basic tools (screwdriver, zip ties, etc.)
- Mounting hardware (pole, brackets, etc.)
- Outdoor-rated Ethernet cable
- A compatible router or antenna (TBD)
- Power source or PoE injector
Node Setup (DIY)
This is a draft guide meant to show what a future DIY setup page might look like. Final steps and equipment will be added once the pilot is up and running.
Overview
This page will eventually walk through how to set up a VONet node on your own. A node is a small piece of equipment, like a rooftop antenna or router, that connects to other nodes and helps grow the network.
When the pilot begins, this page will include specific instructions, tested hardware, and tips based on real installations.
What You Might Need
Rooftop or window with clear line of sight Basic tools like a screwdriver and zip ties Mounting hardware such as a pole or bracket Outdoor-rated Ethernet cable A supported antenna or router (TBD) Power source or PoE injector
Example Steps
1. Choose a spot Pick a location that has a good view toward another VONet node. Higher is usually better.
2. Mount the equipment Secure your device with the right mount. Keep it safe from weather and movement.
3. Run the cable Route your Ethernet cable into your home. Seal any openings and keep the cable tight.
4. Connect power Plug in the device or use a PoE injector if that’s what your setup needs.
5. Align and test Point the antenna toward a nearby node. Signal testing tools or software will be included in the final version of this guide.
6. Clean up and secure Tidy the cables, zip tie any loose parts, and double-check that everything is stable.
7. Report your node Let the VONet team know so we can include your node in the network map.
Things to Know
You’re not just connecting to the network, you’re part of building it There are no fees or contracts All equipment stays yours, even if you leave the network later Everything runs on shared trust and community effort
Status
This page is a work in progress. Once the pilot network is live, we’ll update this with tested gear, safety notes, and step-by-step instructions based on real installs.
Questions or Ideas

Things to Keep in Mind
- You’ll be part of the community network, not just using it
- There are no contracts or fees, just shared responsibility
- Everything you install stays yours, even if you leave later
Status
This setup guide is a concept draft. Actual instructions and supported devices will be shared once we’ve completed early testing and the pilot network is live.
