Purpose

This policy outlines the expectations, rights, and responsibilities of volunteers participating in VONet’s activities, including installations, outreach, technical work, and events.

1. Volunteer Eligibility

  • Most roles are open to anyone age 18 or older.
  • Volunteers under 18 may participate in non-technical or non-installation tasks with parent/guardian consent.
  • All volunteers must complete a basic orientation and sign a waiver before participating.

2. Expectations

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Treat others with respect and professionalism
  • Follow all safety protocols and instructions from staff or team leads
  • Represent VONet in a positive and community-focused manner
  • Communicate clearly and promptly when unavailable or needing support

3. Conduct and Accountability

  • Harassment, discrimination, or unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Volunteers may be asked to leave a project or role at any time if behavior is disruptive, unsafe, or violates policy.
  • All volunteers agree to abide by the Network Commons License and other applicable VONet policies.

4. Training and Supervision

  • Volunteers will be trained as needed for their specific role.
  • For installations and hands-on work, a trained lead or coordinator must be present.
  • Volunteers are encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification before performing unfamiliar tasks.

5. Reimbursement and Compensation

  • VONet volunteer roles are unpaid.
  • Pre-approved expenses (e.g., materials, transportation) may be reimbursed with submitted receipts and a reimbursement form.

6. Waivers and Insurance

  • All volunteers must sign a general liability waiver before participating.
  • Volunteers participating in rooftop or physical installation work must sign a specialized installation waiver.
  • VONet will maintain general liability insurance, but volunteers are encouraged to carry personal health coverage.

7. Volunteer Recognition

  • VONet recognizes and values the contributions of its volunteers.
  • Volunteers may receive public acknowledgment, recommendation letters, or small tokens of appreciation.

8. Fiscal Sponsor Policies

If VONet is operating under a fiscal sponsor, any volunteer-related rules, policies, or insurance requirements set by that sponsor will take precedence in the event of a conflict with this policy.
