Recommended Equipment
This is a draft page. Final recommendations will be added as we complete pilot testing and confirm what works best in our network setup.
Overview
VONet will primarily use MikroTik equipment for building and expanding the network. MikroTik devices are reliable, cost-effective, and offer flexible configuration options for both wired and wireless setups. Some Ubiquiti gear may also be used where it fits specific needs.
This page will eventually list specific models, setup examples, and notes on where to get them. For now, here’s a rough guide to what we expect to recommend.
MikroTik (Primary Equipment)
Wireless CPE Devices
For rooftop nodes and point-to-point links - MikroTik LHG 5 or LHG XL 5 - MikroTik SXT Lite5 - MikroTik SXTsq Lite5 Used to link homes, buildings, or uplink sites over distance
Routers and Indoor Gear
For distributing network access indoors - MikroTik hAP ac² or hAP ax² - MikroTik RB750Gr3 (hEX) for wired-only setups Reliable for small-scale routing and mesh integration
Accessories
- PoE injectors (usually included with MikroTik devices) - Mounting brackets (often built-in) - Shielded outdoor Ethernet cables
Ubiquiti (Optional / Secondary)
Ubiquiti gear may be used in specific cases where signal performance, range, or compatibility makes sense.
Examples: - NanoStation M5 or Loco M5 - LiteBeam 5AC - EdgeRouter X for custom setups
We’ll share more details on how and when to use Ubiquiti gear once we begin testing in the field.
Mounting and Cable Needs
- Outdoor-rated Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet - Zip ties, brackets, or pipe mounts - Weather sealing tape - Grommets or passthroughs for wall entries
Power
Most devices will use passive PoE or 24v PoE injectors Backup power options may be added later depending on need
Selection Priorities
- Affordable and available locally or online - Weather-resistant and good for rooftop installs - Compatible with open configuration and mesh networking - Reliable in Las Vegas conditions
Status
This list is not final. It’s a working draft to guide early planning and testing. Final models, install notes, and pricing info will be added after pilot installs are underway.
