Purpose
This policy outlines how tools and materials are managed, shared, and used by volunteers, staff, and partners involved in VONet installation and maintenance activities.
1. Shared Resources
All tools and materials used for VONet installations are considered shared, community-owned resources. They are maintained collectively and made available for network-building and support activities only.
Examples of Shared Items
- Hand tools (drills, crimpers, wrenches, etc.)
- Safety equipment (gloves, goggles, helmets)
- Ladders, harnesses, and mounting gear
- Routers, antennas, cable, and connectors
2. Usage Rules
- Tools may only be used by trained volunteers or staff who have completed a safety briefing.
- Tools must be used only for VONet-related work unless otherwise approved.
- Equipment should be returned in clean, working condition after each use.
- Volunteers must report damaged or missing tools immediately.
3. Personal Tools
Volunteers may bring personal tools, but:
- VONet is not responsible for lost or damaged personal equipment.
- Tools must meet safety standards and be approved by a site coordinator.
- Power tools may not be shared between volunteers unless approved.
4. Storage and Checkout
- Tools will be stored in a designated, secured location.
- A simple checkout log will be maintained to track who has what and when it’s due back.
- High-value tools may require special approval or supervision.
5. Material Handling
- All leftover materials (cable, mounts, fasteners, etc.) must be returned or documented for reuse.
- Materials should be used efficiently to minimize waste and cost.
- Volunteers must not take surplus materials for personal use unless explicitly approved.
6. Safety and Maintenance
- All tools must be regularly inspected for safety.
- Broken or worn tools should be taken out of use immediately and labeled clearly.
- Volunteers should not attempt to repair high-voltage or specialty tools unless qualified.
7. Donations and Inventory Growth
- VONet welcomes donations of tools and materials that meet project needs.
- All donations become part of the shared inventory and are subject to this policy.
8. Liability and Conduct
- Volunteers use tools at their own risk and must follow all safety procedures.
- VONet is not liable for injuries resulting from misuse or unauthorized use of tools.
- Unsafe behavior is grounds for immediate removal from the project site.
