VONet is a community-led project, and everything we build starts with volunteers. Whether you're technical, creative, organized, or just curious, there's a place for you to help.

Where We Are Now

VONet is in the early planning and pilot phase. We're working on forming partnerships, building our first rooftop nodes, and setting up core infrastructure. We’re also in the process of partnering with a fiscal sponsor to help manage backend administration, fundraising, and compliance so we can stay focused on the mission.

Volunteer Roles

Help configure routers, install antennas, test equipment, or assist with network design.

  • Mesh node setup (MikroTik, Ubiquiti)
  • OSPF and BGP routing support
  • Link planning and line-of-sight checks

Install Team / Rooftop Volunteers

Support physical installations on rooftops and buildings.

  • Mounting antennas
  • Running cables
  • Assisting homeowners or community sites

Outreach and Community Engagement

Help spread the word and bring others into the project.

  • Share flyers and materials in your neighborhood
  • Host or attend local info sessions
  • Help recruit new node hosts or volunteers

Help create how-to guides, wiki pages, and explainer content.

  • Write or edit setup instructions
  • Document volunteer processes
  • Build onboarding tools for new contributors

Translation / Accessibility

Make our resources easier to use for more people.

  • Translate materials into Spanish or other local languages
  • Improve readability and mobile-friendliness

Operations and Admin (Support Roles)

Help with light coordination while we build our formal admin process.

  • Track volunteer interest and communication
  • Support event planning
  • Coordinate equipment orders or donations

What You Don’t Need

You don’t need to be an expert. Most roles can be learned on the job, and we’re happy to train or pair people together.
